Accounting Outsourcing for Australian Practices
An Australian-practice workflow for Xero-oriented bookkeeping, reconciliations, reporting schedules and appropriately supervised preparation.
Australian accounting practices considering India-based support can begin with recurring preparation that fits their own systems and review procedures. A useful scope identifies the records to process, the questions to escalate and the professional who will review the output. It also distinguishes accounting preparation from activities requiring Australian registration or authority.
Start with the bookkeeping workflow
Describe the Xero organisation or other ledger, bank accounts, connected applications and period included. Explain where supporting records are held and who can clarify transactions. Confirm the last reviewed balances before assigning historical cleanup or ongoing bookkeeping.
Scope payables and receivables administration separately where needed. Payment approvals, customer disputes and changes to financial policies should remain with the people appointed to make those decisions.
Prepare a reviewable monthly file
The handover can include agreed bank reconciliations, outstanding-balance schedules and management-reporting preparation. Show unresolved transactions and missing records alongside the completed work. A report should not suggest that a balance has been accepted when it still needs a reviewer’s decision.
If payroll administration inputs or year-end working papers are included, document the preparer’s tasks and the person responsible for checking them. Do not rely on a broad service name to establish authority for tax-related work.
Assess professional and information-sharing requirements
The Australian Tax Practitioners Board’s outsourcing guidance discusses client permission, information disclosure and competence when registered practitioners outsource services. The responsible Australian practitioner should assess the proposed arrangement against the current guidance before information is shared. This article is not an assessment of compliance for an individual engagement.
Dhake & Associates does not claim Australian Tax Agent or BAS Agent status. Regulated advice and submissions remain with the appropriately authorised professional or provider where required.
Test access and the first handover
- Confirm the software edition, integrations and named users.
- Agree instructions, permissions and approved document exchange.
- Identify the Australian reviewer and query contact.
- Arrange a communication overlap and reporting dates.
- Review a limited assignment before increasing the workload.
Xero’s permissions documentation is a reference for the access discussion. Mention of Xero does not imply a software partnership or certification. Recurring delivery should follow the capability and review process demonstrated during onboarding, with changes to entities, hours or responsibilities agreed before they are added.
